Ronnick talks about inventing "high-level oppression": the biggest chance of scoring is in the first ten seconds of regaining the ball
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Sports Daily, Ronnik, the current Austrian national team coach, revealed the keys of the theories he invented that deeply influenced Laporta's theory. Among them, "high-level oppression" is the most prominent.
What is "high-level oppression"? Who is the founder? Why is it important and how to use it?
Ronnick: "This goes back to when I started coaching Hoffenheim in 2006. At that time, we analyzed football around the world's past, present and future, and we realized that the greatest chance of scoring came within ten seconds after regaining the ball. It had nothing to do with football level or league level. Within eight to ten seconds after regaining the ball, the greatest chance of scoring came."
"We also found that this period was also the time to win back the ball. Therefore, the two results we analyzed made us think: What makes sense? What type of football can we apply in Hoffenheim? Later, when I started working for the Red Bull Group in 2011, responsible for the two clubs, Red Bull Salzburg and Red Bull Leipzig In the department, we decided to push further and create a clock called countdown. "
" The ten seconds after losing the ball were the key to regaining the ball, and the next ten seconds were the key to scoring the goal... This is 'high pressure'." "According to Jonathan Soriano (his old player in the Red Bull period) told me that this tactic was very important in Red Bull, dominating all the training, and once the ball was lost it would start..."
"We customized this clock because this type of clock did not exist at the time, and we used it in training. I remember in 2007, after the first few training sessions, the player Salihovic came to our staff and said, 'Who invented this training? It made us nervous!' I said, ‘This is exactly what it should achieve.’”
What are you pursuing?
Ronnick: "Modern football training is essentially a cognitive training, aiming to force opponents to do things they wouldn't have done. This is a tactic we practice in the game. The clock in training is to put pressure on the players. If they take more than eight seconds, the training will be paused." Will this method continue? Who else is using it now?
Ronnick: "The biggest chance of scoring is within the first ten seconds. This is clear. After that, the probability of chance will drop sharply. You have to hurry up, don't waste time, don't pass the ball back to the goalkeeper. Then ten seconds are over. So, if you want to score in ten seconds, you have to hurry up, everyone collaborates to regain the ball, and then go forward quickly."
"If we look at the Champions League now, Kompany's Bayern has started to use this season, and Paris Saint-Germain has done it perfectly. In Spain, Barcelona, coached by Frick, is doing the same, and even the Spanish national team is deeply influenced by this concept."
Ronnick became famous and led Ulm to the second division in 1998. He worked in Stuttgart, Hannover and Schalke 04 and successfully transformed a third-level team, Hoffenheim (2006-11) into a Bundesliga powerhouse.
During his return to Schalke 04, he won the German Cup and reached the Champions League semi-finals. He then became the sporting director for Red Bull Salzburg and Red Bull Leipzig, both of which have undergone three upgrades and consolidated as one of Germany's best.
Under Ronnick, the two clubs have become representatives of the fascinating high-level oppressive style and are the cradles for cultivating talented coaches (such as Nagelsmann, Marsh) and stars (such as Mane, Haaland, Kimmich, and Yupamecano). In addition, he is also the godfather of "high oppression".
