Gasperini: Coaching Roma is a huge challenge, my philosophy is to score more goals than my opponent

Gasperini officially became the head coach of Rome and signed until 2028. Gasperini gave an interview for the first time after signing.

What was your first impression of Rome?

The first impression is undoubtedly very positive. I first came to Trigoria Base today, and I didn't know about it before. But this training base is great and well-equipped, perfect for those who want to work in this environment.

Why did you choose to coach in Rome? What impressed you the most?

Rome, because it is a huge challenge. I need to accept an important challenge and come to a new environment with great enthusiasm. And this place gave me great enthusiasm, and Ranieri, the club, and the boss gave me this opportunity. I need some stimulation to make myself better.

When you bid farewell to Atlanta, you said "need a new challenge to make yourself soar in adrenaline." Is adrenaline determined by the reputation of the environment, the team, the club, or by other factors?

Yes, it is determined by all these factors together. In addition, Rome was also very enthusiastic and wanted to achieve great goals. In my opinion, we have everything at the moment because there is a very strong boss here who wants Rome to continue to develop and to get Rome to a higher level. There are also consultants like Ranieri here, and he is already the guarantee of the fans. There is also a very young sports director, Jisolfi, but he has excellent work ability and a scouting team, and I can see that he has great enthusiasm and is very well prepared. I believe, as I just said, Rome has the best conditions to do a good job.

You have said in the past, "Rome can often play high-level football", is this important for your choice?

When I was a player, I came to Rome to compete. I have played against Roma since then while coaching in Genoa and Atlanta, and I always find this a team that plays well and plays in a stressful environment. Perhaps Rome has declined in recent years, but Ranieri's arrival has brought new strength and important achievements. Although it hasn't met expectations in the past few years, Roma is still able to play great games and work hard to achieve good results, which I think will be of great help.

How can players adapt to your football system?

He has to play very well...haha. It's easy to say, but I don't think there are too many secrets. My game style has reflected my tactical characteristics, my team always plays in some way, the intensity, aggressiveness of the game...but not only that, we have always been a team that can score a lot of goals, always thinking about scoring one more goal than our opponents, rather than conceding less than our opponents - although we have improved a lot in defense in recent years. Therefore, after coaching in Serie A for so many years, these characteristics of me are well known, and I want to do them in Rome.

What do you think of Rome fans?

I have always regarded Rome fans as a model of enthusiasm, and the home court here is always full. The first thing that must be done for me and the team is to get support from the fans, which can be achieved through satisfactory performances, and no matter the result, fans will identify with their team. If you can play wonderful games and let people see the team playing like this, the result will follow.

Are you excited to coach Rome?

I may feel this way at that time, and there will definitely be some emotional fluctuations. But I think that after coaching for so long, it’s just a moment of emotion, and after that I’ll focus on the court.

What are you going to say to the fans of Rome?

The team and I promised to go all out and win the support of the fans, which will be our top priority.
